Slowing Down

Pie for Dinner (and other summer confessions)

I ate pie for dinner last night. Not even going to share what I ate the night before that.

I ate pie for dinner last night. Not even going to share what I ate the night before that.

Summer started out so strong! I explored new trails on my bike and created a new record of days without drinking soda. I met friends for walks and ate roasted vegetables on my porch. I even cooked asparagus! I don’t even like asparagus!

But somewhere in the midst of reading lists and chore charts, I started sleeping in and watching Netflix and trying to space out extra days before going to the grocery. I’ve been avoiding extra commitments and denying that my closets still need organized. I’ve literally been wearing the same shorts for a week and hoping Husband won’t need clean underwear anytime soon.

I started giving myself a hard time last week between eating a cookie and clicking “next” on my instant stream, but then I stopped.

It’s summer.

Isn’t summer supposed to be for rest and relaxation? To intentionally give our brains the gift of free space to breathe and be creative? To sleep, to play, to unwind, and “unschedule”?

Most days out of the year, I wake up at 6:30, shower, do my hair/make-up, search for matching clothes, pack a healthy lunch, drive to work, work all day, run errands, go to gym, make dinner, clean house, organize finances, take my vitamins, then hopefully spend quality time with Husband or friends before going to bed to prepare for doing it all again the next day. I live almost every day following my clock, planner, and schedule.

I deserve some pie.

At least for one more week.
