Tasting Tuesday: Caramel Apple Bars

I’ve given up on being the type of creative person who creates her own recipes and makes a regular contribution to the field of gastronomy. Instead, my version of “being creative” is searching Pinterest and trying something new. And I’m content with that.

This week, fresh from our apple picking harvest, I crafted Caramel Apple Bars from the adorable blog, Sally’s Baking Addiction. I tend to play a guessing game when deciding which precise directions to follow. I did line the pan with foil, which turned out to be an excellent idea due to their intense stickiness, but I did not make my own caramel sauce, so I guess we’ll never know if they turned out right.

But Husband liked them. A lot. So much, in fact, I was barely able to sneak one away to photograph before the pan was empty. My friends at church liked them too, so I guess I’m marking this one as a “hit” and keeping it in my “fall deliciousness” repertoire.

Nothing too complex here: You start with baking a simple shortbread crust and then adding sliced apples coated in sugar and spice. Top with crumble and bake. Drizzle with caramel and ta-da! Time to savor the flavors of autumn!

These bars are the perfect fall antidote to “pumpkin spice everything” and the crust and caramel make it seem a little “dressier” than your average apple crisp.
