Tasting Tuesday: Imperfect Produce

Hi, Friends,

I first found out about Imperfect Produce from another blogger and loved the concept, especially after recently watching Anthony Bourdain’s latest documentary about food waste. I’ve been very motivated to do more about the crazy percentage of food that never makes it to the grocery shelves or is overlooked for not being “pretty” or meeting cosmetic standards. Imperfect Produce is really the best of both worlds because it makes me feel better about food waste, but also keeps me from having to do any work! Win/win!

So what is it? It’s a customized food box delivered to your door full of seasonal fruits and veggies that would otherwise go to waste. It’s an awesome way to get budget produce for all your salads, smoothies, grilling, and general snacking. It’s a subscription service, but you can skip months or cancel any time.

How does it work? The company sources ugly produce directly from farms and ships it to you! To your door! In a box! And you can pick if you want all fruits, all veggies, all organic, small box, big box…you get the picture. Lots of customization options! The produce is perfectly edible, but may be too small or look funny or just be going to waste due to a surplus. But it tastes delicious! AND it’s cheaper than going to the grocery store!

With all their advertising, I was expecting to get some really weird looking stuff, but I’ve received three boxes so far and nothing is weird at all! I’m honestly not really sure why it’s considered “imperfect” because these tomatoes and potatoes and lettuce look awfully like the kinds I buy at the store. BUT NOW they are delivered to my door for less money.

I’m totally sold and this is 100% my own advertising. According to their calculations, I’ve already saved 33 pounds of diverted produce, 189 gallons of water, and 113 pounds of CO2 out of the air just through ordering my three boxes. WINNING! The only bad thing? They’re not in every state/city yet, but the company is growing fast! They were not shipping to Indianapolis when I first heard about them in the winter, but I signed up for their email list and they added Indy just a couple of months later.

So there’s my free plug. And you can get $10 off your first box through my code: https://www.imperfectproduce.com/register.php?referral=358605.

Enjoy! Be fruitful!

  1. Brilliant idea! Not necessary in France as purchasers less worried about imperfections, more mindful about seasonality, locality, provenance and flavour.

  2. Thanks for linking back to my blog 😊 and I’m glad your loving the service. I agree I never got any weird looking produce either, but hey the name is catchy and makes you think about food waste.
