Friday Foodie: Burger Study

St. Elmo’s is Indy’s most iconic restaurant. And the owners of St. Elmo’s just opened a new Ivy-League themed burger restaurant downtown, Burger Study. I like burgers and I like academic environments, so I had to check it out.

I learned these burgers are not for the faint at heart. They’re made from USDA Prime Angus beef and topped with flavors like smoked Gouda, coffee rub seasoning, and special “Study Sauce.” The burgers have fun school names, such as “The Double Major” (a fancier BigMac), “Espanol” (with guacamole), and “The Doctorate” (with foie gras and triple-crème whipped brie). Sides come separately and include man ‘n cheese, zucchini straws, and fresh-cut fries. The menu also has several salad options, but who goes to a burger place to order salad?? Dessert choices include NY Style Cheesecake and multiple different flavors of milkshakes, including one spiked with Bourbon.

I met up with my sister and a friend for dinner on a Monday night. I ordered the Double Major burger ($12), but was disappointed when I realized the patties were too thin to request being cooked “medium” and found the beef to be a bit dry. We split an order of the beer cheese tots ($8), which were by far, the best part of the meal. I tried their take on the classic Moscow Mule for my beverage, which was tasty, but nothing special.

The environment is exactly what you would expect from an upscale burger restaurant: leather booths, green library lamps, and servers wearing bow ties. Service was adequate, but not spectacular. You can make reservations online, but we didn’t need them for a Monday night. Parking was convenient in the Circle Centre Mall garage.

Overall? Good, but not great. And honestly this review sounds boring because my meal was boring. Way too forgettable to make me a frequent visitor. This is a restaurant where I would go if someone asks to meet there, but I’m not going to initiate a return. Food and service were both a bit bland and I expected more from the owners of an Indy restaurant legend.

Overall Rating: 3.5/5

  7. When you spend $12 plus tax/tip on a burger plus parking it just needs to be amazing. Seeing a burger is a thing many of us can make at home.
