Ahh, trying new restaurants. One of my favorite pastimes. This summer, Husband and I have been slowly making our way through Indy Monthly’s annual “Best New Restaurants.” I had been putting off Revery because, even though the menu sounded amazing, it’s all.the.way.in.Greenwood. I never go to Greenwood! But then my friend invited me to go shopping near there and I can’t resist the deadly combo of shopping and dinner, so I relented and off to Greenwood, I went!
And let me tell you about it: so many wonderful things! Popcorn dropped in nitrogen, compressed watermelon salad with prosciutto, and warm, toasty orzo pasta with pesto. Yum, yum. I passed up the drink menu for chilled Mason jars filled with tangy iced tea and munched on skirt steak with garlic butter sauce. The warm atmosphere, helpful service, quiet music, and pleasant company invited me to slowly melt into my chair and take every suggestion our server mentioned. I went home full of chocolate mousse and full of love for Greenwood and everything in it.
Round #1: 9.5/10
I went on about it so much that I convinced Husband to take me again, even before we were due for another date night. I like it so much that I wanted to drive to Greenwood, again!! I should have waited.
Second time around was a completely different story. We were told business had been slow and staff was about to close up for the night, when people starting pouring in. We were herded into a busy back table so staff could start cleaning the front of the restaurant. Popcorn machine was off. Server used her bare hand to pick up a lemon and place it, along with her fingers, in my tea. Kitchen was out of steak and half of the rest of the menu. Pasta came out cold and minus the pesto. Servers were rushed and continued to loudly complain about not being able to close early. Volume was incredibly loud due to so many people packed together. I felt like I was a bother, not a customer. I didn’t order dessert.
Round #2: 3/10
So, I don’t know, Revery. Maybe you’re super cool, maybe you’re not. I’m thinking you get one more chance, so you better make it a good one.
Any other great new places that didn’t make the list?
